How to Get Your Veterinary License in New Mexico

Initial License Application
Initial License Fees

Pay $375.00 - $625.00 to the State Board.

  • Licensing Fee: Prorated from date of license issue to last day of licensee’s birth month
  • Exam Fee: $375 for bi-annul board set days, January and May
    • $625 for applicant selected date
    • $625 for licensure by endorsement

Veterinary License Requirements
Proof of Graduation:

Ask your AVMA accredited veterinary school to submit your transcript & diploma directly to the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine.

  • Foreign Veterinary Graduates: Vets educated outside the US will need to complete the certificate program offered by the ECFVG OR PAVE.

Exam Requirements:

NAVLE: New vets applying for a license in New Mexico will need to pass the NAVLE examination and have their results submitted directly to the New Mexico Board.

Jurisprudence Exam: Applicants in New Mexico will also need to complete a Veterinary Jurisprudence Exam covering New Mexico's veterinary practice act.

Criminal Background Check & Moral Character Requirements:

New Mexico requires applicants to be of good moral character and report criminal convictions.

Required Documents:

  • Submit a 2” x 2” photograph of your face along with your notarized application, notarized copy of diploma, official transcripts, and NAVLE scores

Endorsement Applicants

Veterinarians who are already licensed in another state, US territory, Canadian province, or Washington D.C. must submit a verification of licensure for any licenses currently or previously held, including any disciplinary action taken against any of your licenses by a state veterinary board.

Licensure by Endorsement is available for those with 5 years of practice (6,000 hours).

AAVSB Vault Service: You can have the AAVSB transfer your NAVLE test results, verification of licensure for any other veterinary licenses, and letters of good standing for a fee of $99.

  • A maximum of 7.5 hours of CE may be performed remotely or online.
  • A maximum of 5 hours of CE may be in facility management, records management, or complaint process.

Continuing Education Verification & Documentation

New Mexico does not verify your CE annually, but it is recommended you keep a record of your CE for four years as the New Mexico Board of Veterinary Medicine may randomly audit you.

If you meet the requirements below, you can apply for a Temporary Permit in New Mexico, which allows you to practice for 60 days.

Temporary Veterinary License Requirements

To be eligible for a New Mexico Temp License, you must hold an active license in good standing in another state, US territory, or Washington D.C.
