Frequently Asked Questions
What does it cost to host a Roo Uni extern? Are Roo Uni Externships paid?
What you pay is entirely between you and the Student. Roo Uni Externships are free for hospitals, and Roo does not collect any fees or take a percentage.
Some externships are paid and others are not, depending on your hospital's policies. If you choose to offer paid externships, any pay or stipends will be paid directly to your Student Extern. Additionally, some universities do not allow Students to be paid if they are receiving school credit for their externship. Please check with the Student requesting the externship for further information on their school’s policy or reach out to us with any questions at RooUni@roo.vet.
We strongly recommend hosting paid externships if you can as they are much more attractive to Students.
How long do externships last?
Most veterinary externships last one to two weeks but can extend to a maximum of six weeks. Hospitals can recommend a specific duration as they see fit. Ultimately, it will need to fit into the Student’s schedule. Typically, Students request most externships around their winter and summer breaks when school is not in session.
You'll agree on the official dates and timing of your externship ahead of time with your Student. You'll also be able to adjust the timing of the externship as part of the confirmation step in case changes are necessary following any conversations with your student extern.
What are the requirements for Roo Uni Students?
Roo Uni Students must be first through fourth year Veterinarian Students currently enrolled at an AVMA accredited veterinary school. All Students will provide a current resume as part of their profile. Since Students are not yet licensed, they can come from veterinary colleges anywhere in the United States. The final decision on externship placement will always be made by you.
Recent graduates who are not yet licensed and otherwise unable to practice are welcome to apply for Roo Uni Externships as well.
Does Roo Uni offer externships to Vet Techs or pre-vet students?
Roo only offers externships to Veterinarian Students at this time.
What benefits do Externs commonly receive?
Some hospitals offer lodging, travel stipends, meals, or cover other student expenses. It's up to your hospital to decide what benefits, if any, you wish to offer to your Student Extern(s). Keep in mind any benefits you can offer will make your externship more attractive to Students.
What can Students do at my hospital?
We strongly encourage all hospitals to give Students an ACTIVE experience. However, the amount of hands-on training a student receives is up to you.
We strongly recommend discussing expectations with Students ahead of time. For some hospitals, their externship may include observation, learning to draw blood, and other technical applications. Other hospitals may allow Students to be deeply involved in surgical procedures, patient management, and even allow them to perform advanced clinical skills. We encourage you to gauge the experience level and knowledge of each Student to help guide their clinical experience.
Do Students carry liability insurance? Who is liable if a Student gets bitten or injured?
We strongly recommend all Students carry their own liability insurance. However, we do not make this a requirement. You are welcome to discuss this with Students ahead of their externship and require it if you’d like.
Host hospitals assume all liability for Students. If hospitals want Students to sign a liability waiver, they must provide their own waiver. The AVMA has excellent information on Students and liability found here.
Can I hire a Roo Uni Student after they graduate?
Absolutely! If you had a great experience working with a Student, we’re thrilled if you want to hire them after they graduate. There are no placement fees for Students hired through Roo Uni. In fact, this is exactly why we created Roo Uni in the first place!
