How to Get Your Veterinary License in Missouri

Initial License Application
Initial License Fees

Pay $50 - $200.00* to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board. 

  • Registration Fee: $50.00
  • Grade Transfer Application Fee: $150.00 
  • Reciprocity Application Fee: $150.00

*Examination Applicants (within 6 months of graduation) only need to pay the $50 registration fee.  

Veterinary License Requirements
Proof of Graduation:

Ask your AVMA accredited veterinary school to mail your official transcript directly to the Missouri Board of Veterinary Medicine. The Board will not accept electronic transcripts.

  • Foreign Veterinary Graduates: Vets educated outside the US will need to complete the certificate program offered by the ECFVG (PAVE not accepted).

Exam Requirements:

NAVLE: New vets applying for a license in Missouri will need to pass the NAVLE examination and have their results submitted directly to the Missouri Board. You must have passed the NAVLE within the last 5 years (unless applying via reciprocity process) in less than 4 attempts.

Missouri State Board Examination: Applicants in Missouri will also need to complete a Missouri State Board Exam covering Missouri's veterinary practice act.

  • Two 1.5” x 2” photographs of your face with signatures on the back of each photograph
Reciprocity Applicants

Veterinarians who are already licensed in another state, US territory, or Washington D.C. for more than 1 year must submit: 

  • Verification of licensure for any licenses currently or previously held
  • A certified document verifying you met all examination and education requirements and your license is active and in good standing.

*Unfortunately, Missouri does not accept AAVSB Vault service transfers. You’ll have to have these documents submitted directly from the issuing state board.  

How long does it take to get licensed?

The Missouri Veterinary Medical Board does not specify how long it takes to process license applications. Ensure your application is not missing any documents to avoid delays.

Yearly license renewal forms are emailed to all current licensed veterinarians around September 1st each year. 

If you did not provide an email address, you'll be mailed a renewal application.

What forms of CE qualify in Missouri?

The list of approved CE providers for Missouri can be found here.

  • There is no limit to how many hours of CE may be acquired online.
  • A maximum of 4 hours of CE can be acquired through "non-scientific courses." 

Continuing Education Verification & Documentation

Missouri does not verify your CE annually, but it's recommended you keep a record of your CE for 2 years as the Missouri Board of Veterinary Medicine may randomly audit you.

To change your name, you must inform the board within 60 days of the change in writing. Include appropriate documentation indicating the change, and a $15.00 name change fee payable to the Missouri Veterinary Medical Board. The current license/registration must be returned as well.

Temporary License for Relief Work
Temporary License Fees & Requirements

Unfortunately, Missouri does not offer temporary veterinary licenses that allow relief veterinarians to practice in-state for a limited duration.
