All Roo Locum Veterinarians must have previous veterinary experience and hold an active licence in good standing in any province in which they intend to work locum shifts.
No! As a Roo Locum Vet, you’ll have complete control over your schedule. Work when you want, where you want, however often you want, period.
Roo Locum Vets are independent contractors, and taxes are not taken out of your income, so you’ll get paid exactly what you see on the shift listing. However, you’ll still be responsible for paying taxes on this income later, so we recommend setting some of your Roo earnings aside for tax payments.
Canadian Vets will not be able to pick up shifts in the United States right away at launch, but we hope to make this option available in the future for Vets who are currently licensed in the US.
In the meantime, any Vets who hold an active US license are welcome to create a separate US-based Roo account to pick up shifts in any state(s) where they are licensed.
Yes! You can sign up for Roo to pick up locum shifts to supplement your income or get access to free, RACE-approved CE. Locum work is also a great way to try new hospitals and learn from other doctors.
Roo is free to join with no membership fees and no penalties for inactivity so you have nothing to lose!
No. Hospitals have no visibility into your profile, contact info, or search activity until you request a shift. Your activity is anonymous from all Roo hospitals until you reach out to them.
*”Roo Vet hourly earnings” calculated for completed Roo shifts from 01/01/25 - 12/31/25. “Avg. hourly Vet rate” is an estimated hourly equivalent calculated from avg. professional income and avg. hours worked per week in the 2026 AVMA Report on the Economic State of the Veterinary Profession (based on 2025 survey data). Actual earnings vary by location, shift type, date of coverage, and other shift details.
