Two years into Dr. Emily Cameron’s career, she began working Roo relief shifts as a way to fill financial gaps on her own terms and schedule. She liked the freedom and flexibility relief had to offer.
"I was just trying to make ends meet with my financial situation. Relief's a great option for that."
It also gave her a way to see how different teams operated. Veterinary Wellness Center of Green was the first clinic Dr. Cameron ever worked relief at, and the way the team made her feel comfortable stood out immediately. "Right off the bat, I found the people to be so welcoming."
She described the experience as one where she was able to integrate quickly.
Culture mattered but so did the way the hospital practiced medicine.
Dr. Cameron wanted the time and autonomy to educate, walk through options, and partner with pet owners in decision-making. At Veterinary Wellness Center of Green, she found exactly that. “The medicine that we perform here is aligned with my values, which is hard to find.”
As a newer Vet, mentorship was also very important to Dr. Cameron. The owner, Dr. Troy Larson, was consistently available and especially hands-on in surgery, an area where Dr. Cameron was eager to develop.
"If there's a big surgery, Dr. Larson blocks off time to be able to help me with it. That's how I gained my confidence."
That combination of autonomy and support made a difference. She was able to build skills, ask questions, and grow into the kind of Veterinarian she wanted to be.
