Using Ultrasound to Evaluate the Equine Colic Patient

This course provides an overview of the use of abdominal ultrasound in the evaluation of equine colic patients. Participants will review indications and clinical considerations for performing colic ultrasound, foundational ultrasound principles, and the FLASH (Focused Abdominal Sonography for Horses) protocol. The course will review the seven basic ultrasound windows included in the FLASH protocol and use examples of normal and abnormal sonographic findings to illustrate their clinical application in the assessment of equine colic patients.

Dr. Laramie Winfield, DVM, DACVIM, cVA, cVMMP

Dr. Laramie Winfield, DVM, DACVIM, cVA, cVMMP, is a board-certified veterinary internal medicine specialist and Director of Internal Medicine at Steinbeck Peninsula Equine Clinics. A graduate of the UC Davis School of Veterinary Medicine, she also completed her Large Animal Internal Medicine residency at UC Davis. Dr. Winfield’s professional interests include equine neurology, neonatology and critical care, acupuncture, and spinal manipulation, and she has contributed to numerous peer-reviewed publications in equine medicine.
