A Practical Guide to Discussing Diets with Confidence

Pet food labels contain a wealth of regulated information — but interpreting it accurately requires understanding the rules behind it. This continuing education program gives veterinary professionals a practical, evidence-based framework for reading and explaining pet food labels, so they can guide client conversations with clarity rather than hesitation.

Participants will move through the full anatomy of a pet food label: from the legal and regulatory structure governing what must appear on the label (and who enforces it), to the Nutritional Adequacy Statement, ingredient list, Guaranteed Analysis, and product claims. The course addresses common client misconceptions head-on — including why ingredient list position is not a reliable proxy for dietary quality, what "by-products" and "meal" ingredients mean under AAFCO definitions, why Guaranteed Analysis values are minimums and maximums rather than actuals, and how to convert nutrients across dry matter, as-fed, and energy bases for meaningful diet comparisons. The WSAVA Global Nutrition Committee guidelines are introduced as a practical tool for evaluating pet food manufacturers beyond the label itself.

By the end of this program, participants will be equipped to shift the conversation in the exam room from ingredient-list anxiety to nutritional science — meeting clients where they are while grounding recommendations in regulatory reality.
