Hour 1: Rolling in the Deep Pain: Disc Disease Demystified with Dr. Furman
This lecture reviews the pathophysiology and clinical progression of intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) and provides practical tools to help general practitioners and emergency clinicians confidently diagnose, triage, and manage affected patients. Through case-based discussion and surgical examples, attendees will learn how to assess severity, guide initial medical management, communicate prognosis to pet owners, and determine when referral for advanced imaging or surgery is recommended.
Hour 2: All about Ophthalmology for the General Practitioner: Common Questions and Myths Answered with Dr. Sheahan
This lecture addresses common clinical questions that arise in general practice andprovides practical guidance for approaching frequently encountered ophthalmic conditions. Through case-baseddiscussion, participants will review key concepts such as differentiating types of corneal ulcers, recognizingconditions that mimic one another, and understanding the fundamentals of glaucoma management, including bothmedical therapy and surgical options. Emphasis will be placed on clinical decision-making, early recognition ofconcerning findings, and practical tips that improve efficiency and support ophthalmic care in the general practicesetting.

Dr. Sheahan was born and raised in Edmond, Oklahoma. She graduated with honors form the University of California, Irvine, with a major in Biology and Criminology in 2003. Dr Sheahan discovered her interest in comparative ophthalmology after college when she worked as an ophthalmology nurse for four years. She attended Veterinary School at Oklahoma State University graduating in 2011. Following Veterinary School, she completed a one-year rotating small animal medicine and surgery internship at Ohio State University followed by a three-year residency in comparative ophthalmology at Animal Eye Care. She has a particular interest in ophthalmic pharmacology as well as dry eye disorders and retinal diseases.In her free time, she enjoys photography, running, traveling, and spending time with family.

Dr. Furman has a bachelor degree in Neurophysiology from the University of California, Davis. She received her Doctorate of Veterinary Medicine from the University of California, Davis in 2012. Afterward, she completed a one-year rotating small animal internship at the Veterinary Medical Surgical Group in Ventura, CA followed by a three-year residency in small animal neurology/neurosurgery in Colorado. She also has a Masters degree from Colorado State University in Clinical Sciences.
